Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships
The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships are prestigious awards given to exceptional postdoctoral researchers who are looking to make a significant impact on Canada’s research-based, social, and economic growth. This initiative aims to attract and retain top-tier postdoctoral talent both nationally and internationally.
Every year, 70 Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships are awarded, with a taxable fellowship stipend of CAD 70,000. The fellowship is distributed equally among Canada’s three research agencies, namely the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), and Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). To be eligible for the fellowship, applicants should be in the area of health research, natural sciences and/or engineering, or social sciences and/or humanities.
Application Procedure
Applicants must go through several steps to apply for the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships. First, they must confirm their eligibility, and then contact their desired host institution to confirm eligibility. They must register for Canadian Common CV (CCV) and ResearchNet accounts, create a CCV using the Vanier-Banting academic template, and link it to their ResearchNet account. Next, they must complete a list of tasks listed in ResearchNet, identify their area of research, provide participant information, attach necessary documents, identify three referees, provide degree information, and submit their application.
Selection Process
The selection process involves the review of eligible applications by the selection committee. Applications related to health research, natural sciences and/or engineering, or social sciences and/or humanities are sent to the respective federal granting agencies. The selection of candidates is based on three equally weighted selection criteria, including the applicant’s research excellence, the quality and potential of the applicant’s proposed research program, and the host institution’s research-oriented environment and relationship with the applicant. Following approval from the selection committee, successful applicants are notified in February via their ResearchNet account.
Deadline For Application
The upcoming deadline for the fellowship applications is April 30, 2023. Before applying, applicants must ensure that they and their host institution meet the eligibility criteria. Eligibility criteria include citizenship (Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or international students), degree completion (completed Ph.D., Ph.D. equivalent, or health professional degree between September 15, 2018, and September 30, 2022), and host institution eligibility (Canadian universities, foreign universities, affiliated research hospitals, colleges, and not-for-profit organizations).
