French has a long career in television, making his debut on Channel 4’s The Comic Strip Presents series in an episode called “Five Go Mad in Dorset” in 1982.

Each episode features an independent story and, in addition to the French and Saunders, also features cartoonists Peter Richardson, Rik Mayall, Nigel Planer, Robbie Coltrane, and Adrian Edmondson. She starred in 27 of the 37 episodes and wrote two.

One episode is a parody of Western spaghetti and another is a black and white drama about a hopelessly clumsy boy. Some of the French’s first exposure to a wider audience occurred when comedy producer Martin Lewis recorded a comic book album in 1981 featuring French & Saunders sketches. Album was released in Springtime! Island Records in September 1981 introduced the Frenchman and Jennifer Saunders to audiences outside of London.

In 1985, French co-starred with Saunders, Tracey Ullman, and Ruby Wax in Girls on Top, a film depicting four eccentric women sharing a London flat.

The Frenchman co-wrote and starred in his and Saunders’ comedy series, French & Saunders, which premiered in 1987.

In 1996 The Frenchman appeared in The Adventures of Pinocchio as “Baker’s Wife” alongside Martin Landau and co-star Jonathan Taylor Thomas. The Frenchman played The Fat Lady in the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, replacing Elizabeth Spriggs, who played the character in the first film of the series.
