Mahalia Jackson a citizen of America was born and raised by her Christian family Charity Clark and Johnny Jackson a dock worker and a part-time barber. Mahalia Jackson went on to become one of gospel music’s all-time greats, known for his rich, powerful voice and garnering fans around the world. Jackson grew up in a hut in Pitt Street and Mount Moriah when he was four years old and began singing in the  Baptist Church. When she began singing professionally, she was influenced by the sound of Jackson’s divine performances his style relied on freer movement and rhythm, in contrast to styles found in more

conservative communities. Jackson worked and attended church on Wednesday nights, Friday nights, and most  Sundays. Already at the age of 12, she had a great voice and joined the youth choir. She was surrounded by  New Orleans music, more often the blues, and fascinated by second-line funeral processions returning from the cemetery as musicians played lively jazz, but overflowing from her neighbor’s house. Mahalia met the former construction musician Sigmond Galloway an American musician, who lives in Gary, Indiana. Despite Jackson’s hectic schedule and companionship of his entourage of musicians, friends, and her family, she expressed her loneliness and asked Galloway for her courtship when she had some free time. She surprised her close friends and associates by marrying him in her room. weeks later, while driving back home from a concert in St. Louis, she began to cough and the cough wouldn’t stop. She was later admitted to a hospital in Chicago. The EUC tours (European Concert Tour) were canceled in 1952, Jackson has suffered from fatigue and shortness of breath sometimes. Mahalia Jackson’s civil Rights Movement

Mahalia Jackson was also an active supporter of the civil rights movement. At the request of his friend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., he sang “I Been `Buked and I Been Scorned” at the 1963 March on Washington. In 1966, he published his autobiography, Movin’ On Up. After King died in 1968, Jackson sang at his funeral and then largely retired from public service.

Mahalia Jackson was hospitalized several times due to serious health conditions and she gave her last concert in Munich, Germany in 1971. She died of a heart attack on  January 27, 1972. Jackson is remembered and loved for her passionate performances, her deep devotion to spirituality, and her enduring inspiration to listeners of all faiths. However, the press had been reporting on her health issues and concert postponement for years, her death shocked many fans.

She was buried in Greater Salem, Chicago,  Baptist church, where she was still a member. Over 50,000 people paid their respects, many lined up in the snow the night before, and the next morning their colleagues sang memorable gospel songs. The next day, The Mayor, politicians, and celebrities paid tribute to an audience of 6,000 at the Alley of Crown Theater And were placed under police guard, and 60,000 people saw her coffin.

On the way to Providence Memorial Park in Metairie, Louisiana, the funeral procession passed Mount Moriah Baptist Church with music playing loud on the speakers.
