Queen Elizabeth II Early Life And Career
Queen Elizabeth II was born in the afternoon around 2:40pm on April 21 1926.Her father, the Duke of York (later King George VI), was the king’s second son.
Her mother, Duchess of York (later Queen Mother of Elizabeth), was the youngest daughter of the Scottish nobleman Claude Bowes, 14th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorn, Lyon, and her home in London (17 Bruton Street, Mayfair). She gave birth through Caesarean section.
On May 29, she was baptized in a private chapel at Buckingham Palace by Cosmo Gordon Lang, Archbishop of York in the Anglican Church, and named Elizabeth after her mother. Alexandra is named after her paternal great-grandmother who died six months before her. Maria after her paternal grandmother. Nicknamed “Lilibet” by her relatives.
During her grandfather’s reign, Elizabeth was third in line to the British throne after her uncle Edward and her father.
Her birth attracted public attention, but Edward was still young, likely to marry and have children of his own, and predated Elizabeth in the line of succession, so it was not expected that she would become queen. Did not. When her grandfather died in 1936 and her uncle succeeded her as Edward Her VIII, she became second in line to the throne after her father. Later that year, Edward abdicated after his marriage proposal to divorced socialite Wallis Simpson sparked a constitutional crisis. As a result, Elizabeth’s father became king and took the name George VI.
She became her heir presumptive because Elizabeth had no brothers. If her parents later gave birth to a boy, he would clearly be the heir and above her in the line of succession, which at the time was determined by male primogeniture.
