Siegmund Nissel Biography

Siegmund Walter “Sigi” Nissel OBE was a violinist British Austrian, born on 3 January 1922 in München Germany. Nissel died on 21 May 2008. However, in the Amadeus Quartet, he played the second violin.

Siegmund Nissel Brief History

Siegmund Nissel was born into a Jewish family in Vienna. At a young age he started playing the violin. He lost his mother at a young age.

He was brought to Vienna by his father, where his teachers included Max Weissgärber. Nissel was removed from Vienna in 1938 to London England. During World War II, Nissel was interned as a “friend of the alien enemy” at Camp Onchan on the Isle of Man, where he met violinist Peter Schidlof and later violinist. Norbert Brainin.

Together with British cellist Martin Lovett, they will form the Amadeus Quartet. The Amadeus quartet, informally known as the Wolf Gang, gave their first concert in London in 1948.

The Amadeus quartet has performed around 200 records, including the full quartet. . Adaptations by Beethoven, Brahms and Mozart and works by 20th-century composers such as Béla Bartók and Benjamin Britten (who wrote them in his third quartet).

Nissel played Stradivarius in “Payne” in 1731. He married statistician Muriel Griffiths in 1957, and they had a daughter Claire and a son Daniel. After Schidlof’s death from a heart attack in 1987, the Amadeus Quartet disbanded.

Nissel became professor of the young quartet at the Royal Academy of Music and died in London.

Sigi died in London England on 21 May 2008 at his family house. His wife Muriel said he has been ill for some time before his Death.
